Not doing a budget out of fear of what you will find

That was hubby and I last night.

We sat down and listened to lesson 2 of Dave Ramsey's Financial Peach University. It was on Budget/Cash Flow Planning. As sobering as doing the quickie budget was a few days back doing the actual Cash Flow Plan was even more so -- if that's even humanly possible. So when Dave says people don't do a budget out of fear of what they will find....he's absolutely right. Don't get me wrong I knew we were in bad shape but seeing it in black and white and realizing just how bad of shape it really is -- well it's more than a little scary.

Let's just say that after paying our necessities there is almost nothing left to pay off the credit cards and unsecured debt we have. And neither of us knows how to change that. I laughed last night after we had finished joking with hubby 'that perhaps if we ask nicely God would leave a few gold bars under the bed.'
But seriously I know you get what you give and I have been trying much more to live by those words in my deeds, actions and thoughts but there are still times when it's tough not to get bogged down in it all.

I have no illusions that there are any quick fixes. In life I know that it's hard work that gets you where you need to be yet the idea of what it's really going to take for us to get on better footing frightens me beyond reason. I don't want to declare bankruptcy but as I sat there last night I couldn't help but wonder if that might not end up being our only way out of this mess. I feel like a failure -- especically since deep down I know better and while we were digging this hole we are now in I stood there watching us do it and just continued shoveling.

Mr. Ramsey says we are all human and we mess up which I agree it's just hard to look yourself in the mirror some mornings knowing that it's you who got you where you are. I guess it's time to take responsibility and move forward to a better place.

If you ever need a confidence boost just tune into Dave Ramsey's show, especially on Friday - when you hear the people call up and scream that they are debt free - it's a great motivator! It helped us get through the rough patches! From our experience, we noticed that a lot of what we did when we first started went back to priorities and decision making. (Should we go out to eat or stay home and eat the food we have here?) I can remember many a day eating ramen noodles and $1.29 frozen dinners at work instead of going out to lunch. Just remember - it's not forever, it's only temporary. Once you get the budget and the snowball rolling you'll start finding money you never thought you had and you'll start building on your small successes day after day until your debt free!
